eSoft Delivers Proactive Protection Against Key Microsoft(R) Vulnerability |
|
eSoft, Inc., a leading vendor of OEM technologies for the Internet security and content management markets, announced that its customers are protected against a critical vulnerability in the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Operating System. Customers using eSoft's Intrusion Prevention technology in blocking mode have been protected proactively since long before Microsoft released the patch that fixes the dangerous flaw.
Announced by Microsoft, the vulnerability requires an update that resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. "The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code." eSoft's Threat Prevention Team has detected several viruses that act as worms to spread themselves via these vulnerabilities. The Intrusion Prevention and Gateway Anti-Virus products included in all eSoft ThreatPaks successfully block these threats. Even so, eSoft's Threat Prevention Team recommends users install the emergency Microsoft patches immediately, especially on laptops that may be vulnerable when taken off premises.
"Nearly all versions of Windows are vulnerable, which makes this a very scary threat," said Patrick Walsh, Director of Product Management and Marketing at eSoft. "eSoft's Threat Prevention Team has raised the threat level to high to warn customers of the severity of this threat. However, eSoft's comprehensive and proactive protection means that our customers are well protected so they can concentrate on their own business and leave the network security to eSoft."
